Our students, along with fellow MCH professionals and MCH faculty mentors had the incredible opportunity to hear Dr. McLemore speak about the connections between reproductive justice, structural racism, and disinformation/misinformation. The night involved discussions on future endeavors needed for our field, networking with MCH community professionals, as well as connecting with students who have a similar passion for MCH. This fulfilling experience is one our program is immensely grateful for, and we look forward to seeing what Dr. McLemore continues to do for the profession along with our own students!
This spring, the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Catalyst program held a special dinner event with Visiting Professor Dr. Monica McLemore. Dr. McLemore is a Professor in the Department of Child, Family, and Population Health Nursing and the Interim Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at the University of Washington. Additionally, she is the Immediate Past Chair for the Sexual and Reproductive Health Section of the American Public Health Association, a Black Mama Matter Alliance Board Member, and the Editor in Chief for the Health Equity Journal. Dr. McLemore’s research passions include antiracist birth equity research, community-informed methods, policy translation, and reproductive justice.
The Maternal and Child Health Student Association (MCHSA) helped in organizing this event and used it as an opportunity to collect items for a local organization they are partnered with, Power in Changing, who distributes diapers and other care items for families with young children to families in need.
